arche noVa grew out of a 1992 Dresden relief effort for Bosnia and today specialises in one thing: water. Wells, pipes, latrines, hygiene training – the unspectacular part of development work that most reliably saves lives. At 3.35 per cent for advertising and administration, the organisation runs exceptionally lean.

Trinkwasser am Viktoriasee · Uganda
Together with local partner KWDT: wells, rainwater storage and sanitation for fishing villages on Lake Victoria – a region where the lake is right there and still nobody can drink from it.
One of Germany’s largest private aid organisations, active since 1962 and DZI-certified without interruption since 1992. Its stated aim is to make itself redundant: projects are handed over to local bodies rather than run indefinitely. Scale has a concrete advantage here – water infrastructure needs engineering, maintenance and staying power.

Born out of Hamburg fan and festival culture, Viva con Agua works through music, sport and art – reaching people who would never fill in a donation form. Projects run through its own foundation with local partners.

What you should know
At around 29 per cent, the share for administration and outreach is well above that of many classic aid organisations. That is inherent to the model – outreach is the engine of fundraising here – but you should know it before you decide.
