Amnesty takes no government money for its research work – which is precisely why it can criticise any government, including its own. That independence is funded by many small contributions. It costs more than a few large donors, and that is the point.

The organisation’s oldest mechanism: named individual cases, named recipients, letters from around the world. Unspectacular and demonstrably effective – conditions change, cases are reopened, people are released.
What you should know
A share of 58 per cent for actual human rights work sounds low. For an organisation whose effect rests on membership numbers and public pressure, recruiting members is part of the work – but judge for yourself.
PRO ASYL works where human rights become concrete: inside the proceedings. Its legal aid fund pays for lawyers in individual cases where otherwise no one would object. Alongside that comes documentation of pushbacks at the EU’s external borders.

Founded in 1993 in the middle of the Bosnian war, medica mondiale still works exclusively with women and girls who have survived sexualised violence in war. The approach combines psychological care, legal support and economic independence – none of which works on its own.
